Psalm 22:22-30 (ESV)
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he cried to him.
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.
29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
Compare verses 27-30 above to a more contemporary translation of the text extending through verse 31:
“From the four corners of the earth people are coming to their senses,
are running back to God. Long-lost families are falling on their faces
before him. God has taken charge; from now on he has the last word.
All the power-mongers are before him–worshipping! All the poor and
powerless, too–worshipping! Along with those who never got it together–
worshipping! Our children and their children will get in on this as the
word is passed along from parent to child. Babies not yet conceived will
hear the good news–that God does what he says.” (MSG)
The Fathers of the Early Church interpreted this passage to mean that the final revelation of the heavenly Father would be revealed through His Son, the incarnate Lord Jesus Christ. Given the atoning work of the Son on the cross, those who live for him capture what it means to be the Father’s good and faithful servants bound for heavenly glory. Thus the generation of the New Testament and their spiritual progeny shall be born to the Lord Jesus through faith, then raised through his righteousness to the loving Father who sent him among us.
O God of all the nations of the earth: Remember the multitudes who have been created in thine image but have not known the redeeming work of our Savior Jesus Christ; and grant that, by the prayers and labors of thy holy Church, that they may be brought to know and worship thee as thou hast been revealed in thy Son; who liver hand reigneth with thee and with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
