Psalm 31:9-16 (ESV)

9 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;
my eye is wasted from grief;
my soul and my body also.
10 For my life is spent with sorrow,
and my years with sighing;
my strength fails because of my iniquity,
and my bones waste away.
11 Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach,
especially to my neighbors,
and an object of dread to my acquaintances;
those who see me in the street flee from me.
12 I have been forgotten like one who is dead;
I have become like a broken vessel.
13 For I hear the whispering of many—
terror on every side!—
as they scheme together against me,
as they plot to take my life.
14 But I trust in you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times are in your hand;
rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
16 Make your face shine on your servant;
save me in your steadfast love!

David is clearly suffering in this Psalm. He feels like everyone is against him. It reminds me of the way Jesus must have felt after He was arrested. He was beaten, mocked, and humiliated. Everyone around Him had turned their backs on Him. Have you ever felt like everyone was against you? It is hard when we feel like there is animosity coming at us from all directions.

We can learn a lot from how David responded to his persecution. He put his trust in the Lord. When we feel like we are being attacked by adversaries, we need to put our trust in the Lord. The Lord knows when we are suffering and is always there for us. He never leaves us or forsakes us. He is the One who has the power to change our circumstances and if He doesn’t change our circumstances, He can give us peace to persevere.

David recognizes that the Lord is in control of his circumstances. Imagine if when you found yourself in a difficult time you were able to put your trust in the Lord and when you did the Lord looked down and made His face shine upon you. The Lord loves us with a steadfast love and we need to put our trust in Him in times of trouble and persecution.

Gracious Father, help us to put our trust in You. Help us not hold back but put our full trust in You. When we feel like the world is against us, remind us that you are always with us. In Your Son’s name, Amen.
