Psalm 32:8-11 (ESV)

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
which must be curbed with bit and bridle,
or it will not stay near you.

10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.
11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Life is hectic, crazy, and can be extremely overwhelming.  There are so many distractions and options to deter us away from a life devoted to God.  Often it can feel as though life is controlling us and not the other way around, and that the circumstances we are in determine how we live, what we do, and what we prioritize.  We look to so many other things for direction and purpose yet continue to end up lost and going through life relying on our own strength.  It can be hard to find true joy when life continues to throw a wrench in our plans and when rest comes at a premium.

The psalmist here is helping to redirect us to accept God’s teaching and instruction and not be like a bridled horse.  God longs to guide us with love and wisdom but our own stubbornness and need for instant gratification cause us to lose sight of God’s instruction and wisdom.  This requires our faith to be put into practice, to trust in God and in God’s timing.  We must believe that when God says “he will be with us where ever we go”, that He “will never leave us or forsake us.”

In a society where immediacy means everything, patience can become extremely difficult but we must trust in the Lord and be glad in Him.  In the midst of the craziness of life rejoice and shout for joy that we worship the one true God who is actively involved in each of our lives guiding us and illuminating the paths onto which we are to go.

Heavenly Father, may I truly trust in You and Your holy word.  Grant me wisdom that I may know Your truths and Your ways and grant me patience to work in Your timing.  May Your Holy Name be glorified in all the earth.  Amen
